Christmas at Glass

Blow your own glass ornament.
For Christmas lovers of all ages, the day also offers a Tonttupolku (Elf Trail), a chance to meet Santa Claus, and gingerbread decorating.
COMMON QUESTIONS
Our intensive courses are primarily designed for those with some glassblowing experience. Some courses also welcome beginners eager to learn. For newcomers, prior hands-on experience—such as crafts or working with other materials—can be helpful.
Each course has an indicative skill level, explained below. If you’re unsure whether your skills match, email us at courses@nuutajarvenlasi.fi and we’ll figure it out together.

All welcome
Students with no experience, some experience or years of experience are welcome.
Beginner
No experience or little experience
A beginner is someone who has never worked with glass before or has had very little experience with it.
Intermediate
For example, about a year or more of experience and confidence in their skills. An intermediate has experience in the basics of glassblowing. They know how to gather hot glass from the furnace and shape it. They know the basics of working in the in hotshop.
The courses are intended for those who have worked intensively with glass and want to attend the course to improve their skills and knowledge.
Advanced
Solid experience; solid skills
An advanced student has solid glassmaking skills and extensive experience. The aim of the advanced courses is to provide instruction for artists and glassblowers who are honing their already established skills and learning challenging techniques.Nuutajärvi is located in southern Finland, surrounded by forests and lakes. The nearest public transport stops are in Humppila (by bus) and Toijala (by train). Unfortunately, there is no direct public transportation all the way to Nuutajärvi.
We can arrange a private transfer from Humppila, Toijala, or Helsinki-Vantaa Airport for an additional fee. Please email us if you would like a transfer from one of these locations.
The accommodation package includes 7 nights, which means you should plan to arrive in Nuutajärvi on Monday of the course week.
Bring a sketchbook and an open mind. Choose clothes made from natural fibers – they breathe in the heat. Closed-toe shoes are required in the hot shop. If your skin is sensitive to radiant heat, pack long-sleeved shirts for working.
Remember, Finnish summer can surprise you: evenings and nights may be cool.
Clear glass is included in the course price. You can purchase additional colours from Nuutajärvi’s limited colour selection, or bring your own glass colours if you prefer.
Nuutajärvi Glass is building a brand-new hotshop, opening in June 2026. The studio will be equipped for a wide range of glassblowing courses: three glory holes, three benches, hand tools, gas torches, and enough annealers for all participants. For coldworking, we rent a local grinding facility.
Participants stay at Kylähotelli 1973, located next to the glass center. Each room is shared with another participant and includes a shower, toilet, TV, desk, and two twin beds (90 cm wide).
Packing materials are available for purchase at Nuutajärvi Glass. You are responsible for packing and transporting or shipping your work. For an additional fee, we can pack and ship your pieces for you. Clear glass can be remelted, but we charge a small recycling fee for leftover colored glass.
The nearest grocery store is in Urjala, about 13 km from Nuutajärvi. Urjala also has an ATM, liquor store, and other small-town services. We can arrange a group transfer to Urjala upon request.
Meals are not included in the course fee, but when you purchase the accommodation package, you also get a meal plan that includes breakfast and lunch for six days. Our restaurant serves a variety of vegetarian and meat dishes. Please inform us of any dietary restrictions at least two (2) weeks before the course begins.
The hotel’s common areas have a small refrigerator, microwave, and coffee and water kettles, but no cooking facilities.
Pruuki Bistro, located in the Glass Village, offers à la carte dishes as well as snacks like chocolate, chips, cookies, and soft drinks. In addition to Pruuki Bistro, Café Olderman and Pub Airanne also serve guests—please check their opening hours.
The plan is indicative, and the exact schedule depends on the number of participants and course content. We will email the detailed schedule to participants before the course begins.
Monday: Arrival in Nuutajärvi in the afternoon. Group dinner at 19:00 at Pruuki Bistro. Participation is optional and self-paid.
Tuesday: 09:00–16:30 instruction, 17:00–21:45 open studio time. Lunch break 12:00–13:00, break 16:30–17:00.
Wednesday: 09:00–16:30 instruction, 17:00–21:45 open studio time. Lunch break 12:00–13:00, break 16:30–17:00.
Thursday: 09:00–16:30 instruction, 17:00–19:00 open studio time. Artist presentation by the instructor 19:00–20:00 in the meeting room. Lunch break 12:00–13:00, break 16:30–17:00. Evening free for exploring the area.
Friday: 09:00–16:30 instruction, 17:00–21:45 open studio time. Lunch break 12:00–13:00, break 16:30–17:00.
Saturday: 09:00–16:30 instruction, 17:00–21:45 open studio time / coldworking. Lunch break 12:00–13:00, break 16:30–17:00.
Sunday: 10:00–15:00 coldworking and packing, 13:00–15:00 studio cleanup. Lunch break 12:00–13:00.
We will inform you closer to the course about optional activities, such as guided museum/history tours or nature walks in the surrounding area.

REGISTRATION & PAYMENTS
By registering for the course, you agree to the registration and participation terms. If you have any questions about these terms, please contact courses@nuutajarvenlasi.fi.
REGISTRATION & PAYMENTS
Participants must be at least 18 years old to attend the course.
Register for the course by filling out the form on our website. Within a couple of business days, you will receive an email with details for paying the non-refundable deposit. Once the deposit has been paid, your registration for the course is confirmed.
The course fee is €1,100. The Early Bird price of €980 applies to bookings made by the end of February. The course fee includes VAT. The course fee covers tuition and basic materials. Accommodation and meal packages are booked separately when registering for the course.
The accommodation and meal package costs €692 and includes 7 nights of accommodation and breakfast and lunch for 6 days. More details about the package can be found in its own section.
The accommodation and meal package is designed to enhance the learning experience: participants can fully focus on working with glass and engaging with other participants and instructors. However, if you live nearby and do not need the accommodation and meal package, please email courses@nuutajarvenlasi.fi before registering.
Participants are responsible for any additional fees charged by banks.
PAYMENT SCHEDULE
Participants must pay a non-refundable deposit of €300, even if participation is cancelled. The deposit will be deducted from the total fee, which is €1,100 (Early Bird price €980).
The deposit and final payment are invoiced by email. The deposit is due two (2) weeks after registration. The final payment is due sixty (60) days before the start of the course. Your place on the course will be cancelled if the final invoice is not paid by the due date.

ACCOMMODATION & MEALS
Participants stay in shared twin hotel rooms, examples of which can be viewed here.
Each hotel room has a toilet and shower, a desk, and two single beds. Rooms do not have cooking facilities. A microwave, water and coffee kettles, and a small refrigerator are available in the hotel’s common areas. Other guests may also be staying at the hotel during the course.
Breakfast and lunch included in the total price are served at the Pruuki Bistro restaurant next to the hotel. Dinner can be purchased at the restaurant during its opening hours. Food can also be prepared outdoors at a nearby hut over an open fire (reservation required).

Pruuki Bistro sells snacks such as chips, chocolate, and soft drinks. In addition to Pruuki Bistro, Café Olderman and Pub Airanne serve guests (please check opening hours online). The nearest grocery store is in Urjala, about 13 km from the Glass Village.
CANCELLATIONS & REFUNDS
If you cancel your registration sixty (60) days before the first day of the course, you will receive a refund of the full amount except for the €300 deposit, which is non-refundable. If you cancel at least thirty (30) days before the first day of the course, you will receive a refund of half the course fee. No refund will be given if you cancel less than thirty (30) days before the first day of the course or if you have to leave the course early. The accommodation and meal package will be refunded if cancellation is made 14 days before the start of the course.
We reserve the right to cancel any participant’s attendance at any stage if we consider the participant’s behaviour to be dangerous or inappropriate.
All cancellations must be made in writing by contacting courses@nuutajarvenlasi.fi (cancellations are not accepted by phone).
If Nuutajärven Glass must cancel the course for any reason, participants will be notified by email and will receive a full refund of the course, accommodation, and meal fees. All courses have a minimum number of participants. If the course does not meet the minimum number thirty (30) days before the start date, it will be cancelled.
In the event of any type of cancellation, Nuutajärven Glass is not responsible for reimbursing plain tickets or other travel expenses. Applicants are advised to check their travel insurance coverage.
We recommend that participants concerned about refunds due to cancellations or unexpected travel disruptions consider purchasing travel insurance. For more information about insurance, please refer to your insurance provider’s website.
INSURANCE
The event organizer has valid liability insurance covering direct personal injury and property damage caused by our operations, in accordance with the insurance terms. Please note that we are not responsible for any indirect damages or costs (such as travel expenses, accommodation, loss of income, or similar).
Participants are required to have valid accident and/or travel insurance, which also includes personal liability coverage for any damage the participant may cause. Each participant is also responsible for ensuring adequate insurance coverage, including insurance for personal property.
OTHER TERMS
If the customer has injuries, illnesses, or other limitations that may affect their safety, the customer is obliged to inform the event organizer.
In the event of force majeure, the event organizer has the right to cancel or interrupt the course. If the event is cancelled entirely, the customer will be refunded the full amount paid. Other immediate or indirect costs possibly caused by the cancellation will not be reimbursed. If the event is interrupted due to force majeure (e.g., sudden change in weather conditions) or illness, neither full nor partial refunds will be given, whether the interruption concerns the entire event or an individual participant. No refund will be given if the event must be interrupted for an individual participant due to their actions or behaviour.
PRINCIPLES FOR A SAFER SPACE
Everyone entering Nuutajärven Glass’s premises commits to a culture where everyone feels safe, heard, respected, and treated fairly. Individuals must respect shared space and resources, equipment, tools and materials, as well as personal space, and always follow the company’s safety and community guidelines.
When working together at Nuutajärven Glass, we are collectively responsible for ensuring that everyone—colleagues, customers, and partners—feels good and safe. We are committed to these principles, and we all share the responsibility to intervene if they are not followed.

5. Everyone has the right to intervene
We address inappropriate, disruptive, discriminatory, or bullying behaviour.
> Speak directly to the person causing harm, approach the affected person and offer help. Calmly explain that the behaviour cannot continue. If talking does not resolve the issue, report misconduct to courses@nuutajarvenlasi.fi.

MEET THE TEACHER
TUTUSTU OHJAAJIIN
TORSTEN RÖTZSCH
is a freelance glassblower and artist living and working in Germany. He began working with glass through a glass design training 20 years ago and has since worked in several studios. His interest in combining tradition with contemporary practice started with building simple wood-fired furnaces. Through international collaborations, he broadened his knowledge of a wide range of techniques.
Rötzsch has received several awards, and his works are represented in German glass collections. For the past three years, he has run his own studio near Dresden in eastern Germany, where he works with many different artists and continues to develop his own versatile body of work.
