Inside the world of Toikka’s glass birds

Few objects are as closely linked to Finnish glass art as the glass birds created by professor, artist Oiva Toikka (1931–2019). Over the decades, these hand-blown sculptures have found their way into homes, collections, and museums around the world.

Glass art can also be experienced in Nuutajärvi as part of the historic factory environment and the surrounding nature. In the photo: work by Janne Rahunen.

The exhibitions and museum provide visitors with insight into the traditions of glassmaking, the diversity of design, as well as the legends and classics of glass. The protected, decorative Glass Village is an impressive cultural destination of its own.

In addition to the galleries of local artists, contemporary glassworks can be seen in the rotating exhibitions. They reveal the shapes glass can take in the experimental hands of today’s creators.

PAULINA VARIS:
REFLECTIONS AND SEASONS OF GROWTH
9 MAY 2026 –  30 AUGUST 2026  |  PRYKÄRI AULA (GLASS MUSEUM)

Reflections and Seasons of Growth by Paulina Varis explores a moment where direction is not given, but must be chosen. It is a kind of love letter to the experiences, lessons, and memories that shape us, yet are rarely shared. The images in the works are constructed from fragments of mirror, as if painting with glass.

Admission to the exhibition with a Glass Museum ticket.

The Prykäri Glass Museum’s permanent exhibition showcases glass made in Nuutajärvi from the 19th century to the present day. The exhibition also features pieces designed for Nuutajärvi by some of the most significant designers of the 20th century — including works by Gunnel Nyman, Kaj Franck, and Saara Hopea.

Upstairs, you’ll find the Prykärin Vinttigalleria, which is an art gallery for rotating exhibitions. Admission to the gallery is included with the museum ticket.

The museum building was constructed during the glass factory’s major expansion period in the 1850s. Originally, the building housed the factory’s brewery — known as the “prykäri,” which also gave the building its current name.

The Prykäri Glass Museum is designed by glass artist and professor Kaj Franck. Franck created the museum’s interior architecture and display cases and selected the objects to be exhibited. The museum opened to the public in 1977 and was renovated as part of the glass village’s major restoration for the year 2024.

OIVA TOIKAN LINTUKOTO

The Oiva Toikka Birdnest is a permanent exhibition of glass birds designed by artist and professor Oiva Toikka. It tells the story of both the birds and Oiva Toikka himself. Toikka’s birds were produced in Nuutajärvi for more than 40 years. The first mass-produced flycatchers took flight in 1972, beginning the birds’ migration across the world.

oiva toikka_edited.jpg

Oiva Toikka (1931–2019) became known for his imaginative and bold designs, especially his glass birds. Nuutajärvi, the home of the glass bird collection, was also Toikka’s and his family’s home village for many decades. The village still hosts the glass school Toikka helped establish — the first vocational program in Finland leading to a formal qualification in glassmaking.

No one knows the exact number of glass bird species created by Oiva Toikka, but there are hundreds. The Birdnest collection consists of birds owned by the Nuutajärvi Glass Village Cultural Foundation, birds that were already in the village, pieces on loan from other collections, and donated birds acquired through a special campaign.
